These insects are quite tiny compared to the big game that they are named after. However, in the insect world, they are gargantuan. Using 24k gold leaf, I have highlighted the insect anataomy that connects them to their big game counterparts. The play of traditional big game mount fixturing and traditional entomology specimen spreading creates a scale shift and an interesting view of what is 'big game'.

This project served to outfit the Brown University Center for the Creative Arts with furniture for its atrium landings. We formed a collaborative design team to create a series of prototypes addressing issues of utility, versatility, comfort, durability, and color. The couch can form a variety of arrangements to suit changing student needs, while the stools double as both seating and task surface.

This lamp armature allows the user to hang a light anywhere there is an outlet. Designed around the realization that outlets are always accompanied by wall studs, the piece requires only one screw in the wall. The single cleat allows for a variety of configurations, as the armature is free to lean out from the wall. The armature can be disassembled with thumb screws and reconfigured to switch the bend up or down. This allows the light to be hung over the edge of a table or desk.

This cabinet combines soft goods with walnut, exploring a different way to open and close. The felt works like tambour, sliding in a track, but unlike traditional rigid tambour, it is allowed to shift and billow. When closed, the cabinet has a quiet, sleek demeanor, but the inside reveals a patterned liner that adds lightness to the piece.

This lamp began as an investigation in perceived value. When faced with the challenge of creating a new piece from mass produced, disposable objects, I chose the plastic cup. The interaction between user and lamp is at once familiar and new. While the cups are stacked, they are turned sideways and mirrored. This creates a new, unknown shape to react to, while the light transforms the plastic cup, giving it a soft glow. The light intensity can be modulated by sliding the cups in and out.

This table is an attempt to exploit what one typically tries to hide in laminate furniture, the fact that each piece is different. In most laminate plywood furniture, each piece is made to be exactly the same, then once assembled is sanded until it appears to be one solid piece, or each piece is made to be slightly different, then sanded to create one smooth compound curve. With cut.glue.table. I attempted to make each layer its own unique piece. In this way, I gave more usability to the table. Rather than just a surface, this coffee table has usable storage. On one end, the layers pull apart to create inclosed storage for magazines or remotes. The other end creates a bowl which could house nearly anything. There is still flat, usable surface over most of the table, as well as solid surface in the center of the table.

This coffee table was designed during an architecture studio at Cal Poly. The dimensions were prescribed by the size of the original piece of aluminum, which was salvaged from a dumpster downtown. The challenge of the piece was to generate a useful, attractive form by only cutting and folding the aluminum. By cutting a long U in the sheet then folding perpendicular to that U, two surfaces could be created. The secondary surface sits lower than the primary surface and creates semi-hidden storage for books, magazines, and remotes. The shelf sits in the cradle created by folding its own void.

This collaborative project was focused around the design of custom office furniture to fit with the unique existing spaces originally designed by Morphosis Architects. No furniture fit the spaces. For the last 15 years, the house has been occupied with hardly any furniture. The furniture they do have is very basic, off the shelf, and does not fit well. We approached the owners and offered to do some furniture design for them, and were commissioned to do the office loft. We were given some rough shapes to work with which we changed and shifted. We built cabinetry that echoed the built in pieces separating living and dining downstairs. The cabinetry was topped with clearcoated 10 gauge steel plate for a work surface.

The desk surface sits on cabinetry on one side and a filing cabinet on the other. The cabinetry has display shelving toward the outside and storage space toward the inside hidden from view by a perforated panel on the front. The storage is accessed from the inner side by sliding another perforated panel back. This cabinet also houses a drawer which is made of perforate with a solid sheet being used as an insert. The file cabinet consists of a steel tube frame and perforate drawers. The files hang on the drawer frame, and since the drawer bodies do not support any weight they are left very light. The surface of the desk has two slots to access power outlets and keep cords organized. The slot at the back runs into an electrical box which houses a power strip. Behind the desk, the surface seems to bend down to the floor as there is another piece of steel mounted there.

The worktable has display shelves toward the large window and staircase, and storage toward the desk. The storage is hidden by perforated steel panels that slide vertically. The panels nearest the desk slide nearly to the floor to allow a sewing machine drawer to be accessed. There are counterweights tucked into the display shelving connected to each panel. This allows the motion of the panels to be explained and put on display.

This project, sited in a busy district of Tokyo, was completed during my time studying abroad in Japan. It was developed as an exploration of storage in small spaces. The idea was to store the services in the floor of the weekly mansion. The bathroom and rarely used kitchen are several feet below the living space and are closed off by panels when not in use to provide more open, usable space for more of the time. The project also includes a retail space above the open ground level and a bar at basement level. The floors are staggered to provide each unit with its own entry landing. The service areas in the retail space and at the roof level reference those in the units. These act as planters on the roof and fitting rooms and displays in the store. The exterior of the building facing south is clad with sliding metal screens over sliding windows allowing the units to be open, closed, or ventilated while maintaining privacy.
